Hello All,

I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself as the Local 3640 Chair of the Education Committee. My name is Kailey Isley, I have been with the company almost 10 years now working in various departments. I am one of your union stewards should you ever need assistance. You will start to see postings from time to time as a way to help educate you about what benefits the Union can provide as well as just helpful information about finding the resources we have available as employees. If there is ever anything you have questions on or want to see more information about please reach out.

Today's topic is a quick visit to Steward-Land 🙂

Why do you want to have a steward in a Discipline Meeting with you?

-accountability for your CCM to treat you fairly

-your steward will know what timelines need to be followed for discipline.

Sometimes CCM will present an “untimely” discipline. On that basis alone, it cannot be used to issue disciplinary level.

-serving as a witness.

-a steward will know your rights as an employee and a union member.

-a steward will have had experience helping others in similar situations and have access to other stewards' experiences in the situation you are in, so that whatever discipline is issued is consistent with past employees in similar situations.

-a steward is a WORKING employee who “gets” the job… because they are also showing up every day doing it!

How is a steward assigned to a meeting?

The CCM will send a message out to all stewards using an email distro-list ([email protected]) and an on-duty steward “replies-all” that they are available to attend the meeting.  If no steward replies, the CCM will reach out directly to the Chief Steward and together they will work on a resolution.  Contract Article 25. C. states the steward needs to be “on duty.”

How can I become a steward?

Occasionally, based on need, the Local will need to train stewards. Often, this is due to a need to cover certain times in our 24-hour operation when CCM’s express ongoing difficulty acquiring on-duty stewards to represent employees. When this occurs, the Local leadership will post and email an open-call for steward interest. There is a casual discussion scheduled to determine the typical shift an employee is awarded, the ongoing availability of that person, availability for the training date, and level of commitment and interest. This is also a good time for a candidate to ask their own questions.
